Edinboro University Recreational Sports Guidelines for Participation
1) Eligibility
a. Athletes participating in a varsity sport cannot participate in that “like” sport. (Ex: if you play intercollegiate varsity basketball, you cannot participate in the Recreational Sports basketball league).
b. Former varsity athletes will be eligible to participate in that “like” sport after sitting out one full semester following participation in that particular varsity sport. This applies to all transfer, junior College and Graduate students.
c. No more than one former collegiate athlete (from that “like” sport) per recreational sports team.
d. All team sports participants must participate in at least 50% of all regular season scheduled games in order to be eligible for post-season of tournament play. In the case of an odd amount of games, the player must have played in the greater amount. (i.e. 7 games – player must have played in at least 4)
e. In sports where a coin toss is needed the away team will call the flip in the air.
f. No jewelry or baseball caps may be worn. Baseball caps are permitted for softball and kickball only.
g. Players may come late but must sign in before participating in the sport. If the team is playing short, the player may come on at the next eligible substitution opportunity. Softball and kickball are exception to this rule. No player may sign in late for softball or kickball.
h. Teams with players who come late must have the minimum amount of players signed in to start the game ten minutes prior to the scheduled start time and play full-strength when enough players show up.
i. It is a privilege to participate in recreational sports. Students convicted of a crime, during the semester, by any police department will be banned from participation. If a player is convicted during the league or tournament play they will not be allowed to continue.
________________________________________________ 2) Rosters
a. All rosters must be completed IN FULL by the date they are due for that particular sport. This would include: an acceptable team name, legible player names, completed Student Identification Numbers, and phone numbers. Any roster not meeting this requirement will not be accepted. Must be completed in full! – In the case we cannot contact the team captain other players will be contacted for league and playoff information.
b. Teams MUST denote a captain and co-captain, they cannot be the same person. These names should not be included in the lower portion of the roster.
c. All rosters are final once handed in to the Recreational Sports department. Injury or medical exemptions with verifications are the exceptions to this rule with approval from the Recreational Sports Graduate Assistant or Coordinator for Recreational Programs.
d. Each team captain is responsible for collecting/paying a forfeit/sportsmanship fee of two dollars per team member. This amount is due at the captains meeting. Failure to do so will result in a forfeit for your team. Any team that does not forfeit out of the league and maintains a 2.5 sportsmanship rating during league play and a 2.0 sportsmanship rating during playoff play will be reimbursed half of the fee.
e. The Recreational Sports Office also allows for free agency (individuals who wish to participate but did not form their own team). These individuals are not guaranteed to be placed on teams by the Recreational Sports staff. A team may select from the free agent list according to their team need. Only after they have been placed on a roster can they participate.
3) Rescheduling
a. May be due to poor weather and/or and emergency situation. This at the discretion of the Recreational Sports Office.
b. Any team may apply for a change in the schedule at the Recreational Sports Office at 732-1465. This must be done at least a week in advance with the first week being an exception.
c. Request must be made at least a week in advance.
d. Please note – This is only an application! The schedule will only be changed at the discretion of the Recreational Sports Office.
e. Teams, which do not follow these procedures, will be considered to have forfeited their contest.
f. When filling out a roster make a note of a day and time that your team will not be able to attend and the scheduling will be worked around team’s needs if possible.
________________________________________________ 4) Forfeitures
a. Forfeiture will result if a team is late to their scheduled contest or if they do not have the required number of players signed in to begin the contest ten minutes prior to their scheduled start time. Forfeiture also occurs if a member of the team is unable to attend the captains meeting or is not fully paid for all team members by the conclusion of the captain’s meeting.
b. Two (2) forfeitures will disqualify a team from further league play.
c. A double forfeiture will result if neither team attends the contest or if neither team has the minimum number of players signed in to begin the contest at least ten minutes prior to the scheduled start time.
d. Any player talking back to the refs, other than the captain and co-captain will result in the team being awarded a forfeit with the game stopping instantly. The player is ejected and cannot play in their next two games. Any player talking poorly about the refs will be ejected and the sportsmanship rating will be zero (0). If a player has a problem with a ref or a call they must first talk to their captain and the captains may talk to the ref. If the captain is aggressive toward the ref, they will be ejected.
e. If a team walks off the field or court before the time expires the game will be forfeited by that team. This includes individuals on the game field or court who removes their jersey before the game clock expires. Every team must have enough players to complete the contest.
________________________________________________ 5) Game Time
a. All teams are expected to be present and signed in for their scheduled contest AT LEAST 10 minutes prior to the start of their game. Forfeiture will result if a team does not have the minimum number of players present and signed in ten minutes prior to the beginning of the contest. The forfeit occurs if the player is not at least in line (if there is a line) ten minutes prior to the game start time. It will not matter if they are present, they must be signed in as well.
b. Teams are required to have a valid EUP student ID when signing in. It does not matter if the staff knows you, you must have your student ID or you will not play.
c. For playoff and sportsmanship rating reasons all players present at events must sign-in even if a forfeit is awarded.
d. A player may sign in late for all sports other than softball and kickball. If the team is playing short, they may go full strength on the next substitution chance.
________________________________________________ 6) Protest and Appeals
a. All protest and appeals should be directed to the Recreational Sports Graduate Assistant who will meet with the team captain and/or co-captain ONLY. If there is still an issue that the captain and/or co-captain feels is unresolved they may request to meet with the Coordinator of Recreational Sports.
b. These protest and appeals will only be heard regarding rulings and not involving judgment calls.
c. These complaints must be filed in writing within 24 hours after the end of the contest in question.
d. These protests and appeals will be reviewed first by the Recreational Sports Graduate Assistant, a student supervisor, an appointed official who was not involved in the incident, and if needed the Coordinator of Recreational Sports.
e. A judgment will be made within 48 hours of the appeal.
f. No protest or appeal will be accepted if not legible.
g. If the team representative or captain does not attend their scheduled meeting, the protest will be regarded as VOID.
________________________________________________
7) Sportsmanship
a. Unsportsmanlike behavior and/or profane and abusive language are grounds for ejection from the contest and reduce the sportsmanship rating for the game.
b. Any player who is ejected from a contest will be suspended from play and their next two scheduled games. If the conduct is deemed server they will be suspended for more games and possible the league. The player must leave the viewing area of the sporting event. Failure to do so will result in a team forfeit and the player being ejected for the league.
c. Any player with two (2) ejections for unsportsmanlike conduct within two consecutive semesters will be eliminated from further play for length of two consecutive semesters. (i.e. eight month, excluding summer)
d. Any behavior that the Recreational Sports Staff deems overly aggressive will be reported to the Campus Police and possibly Judicial Affairs.
e. The final decision to eject a player from the league will be made by the Coordinator of Recreational Programs and/or Recreational Sports Graduate Assistant if available.
f. The Office of Recreational Sports and all staff members consider sportsmanship as important as the right to participate in the Recreational Sports program. Participants should always remember that they can and will be barred from Recreational Sports permanently depending on the severity of their actions.
g. Sportsmanship Rating: received SR from the Recreational Sports Staff.
1. 4 pts (Excellent) — Earned by a team which demonstrates good sportsmanship and maintains an excellent attitude of complete cooperation. Full and complete support of the officials.
2. 3 pts (Above Average) — Earned by a team when there is no incident of poor sportsmanship. Respect shown for opponents and officials.
3. 2 pts (Average) — Earned by a team when unsportsmanlike conduct is not present in the game except for rare minor infractions. Poor behavior limited to individual/s, not to the entire team.
4. 1 pts (Below Average) — Earned by a team if players, other than the captain, question an official’s decision, or argue with an official (this player is ejected).
